Lips

All dolled up

I'm going to Los Angeles County Museum of Art today and I wanted a little bit more than a splash of color. I didn't want to do full on makeup, but more than just 5 minutes. I'm running early so I thought I would type of another makeup review.

Big Color Glossy Lip Pencil (Glossy Rose) and Ultra Luxury Lip Liner (Wild Berry)

I put the lip pencil on without the liner and it looked way too pale. I wanted something different so I decided to line my lips and see if that made any difference. The only lip liners I currently have that would match the lip color was Wild Berry. I thought it would be way too dark around the pale pink...but I knew I could always just wash it off and start over.

I was wrong. Wild Berry lip liner around the Glossy Rose lip pencil is a perfect match. It's actually only a shade or two darker and it really brings out the lip colors.

Not too thick, not too dark, not too pale and doesn't instantly rub off when I drink something.

OK.... now I need to choose shoes so I gotta go.

Example of A Starlet Hollywood Siren

In Brownsville, Tx

Ili Jean is a plus size Pin Up Model, Ballerina & Burlesque Dancer as well as a full time college student working towards a PhD. She hasn’t let anything stop her from moving forward despite a few callus people and society’s delusion of what a women should look like and be.

Ili jean is a smart and beautiful woman and sadly she is a unique piece of art – we could really use more people like her. I thought the interview was a wonderful example of self determination, overcoming one’s fears and bringing out your inner beauty.

Magazine: Pin Curl

Brownsville based pin-up model Ili Jean discusses Andy Warhol, makeup, and inspiration.

Q: What songs are in heavy rotation on your MP3 player right now?

Right now anything by: Johnny Thunders, France Gal, The Clash, The Velvet Underground, Wanda Jackson, The Shangri Las, The Ventures.

Q: You do a lot of conceptual shoots. How much of that is you, and how much of that is the photographers you choose to work with?

One can’t function without the other; a pack of wolves is as good as the hungriest wolf, and we’re all starving to do exactly what’s on our minds. I am very fortunate to be able to work with such artistically driven individuals; we work together on producing photo concepts that fill our goblet of creativity. As of late we have been taking a more avant garde approach which has kept our minds busy with tons of new in depth ideas.

Q: You don’t see a lot of pin-up models in Brownsville, Texas. What’s the scene like there? Do you find yourself mostly traveling for shoots?

Brownsville is a small town with a lot of room grow , the photographers I work with regularly, live here in the Rio Grande Valley, but I do mostly travel to perform more so than shoots.

Q: What are your top three favorite cosmetic products and why?

– Magic Power by Prescriptive is a translucent powder that gives skin a shimmery glow after you have applied your make up. I never leave home without it.
– Show Dior mascara is the only mascara on earth that has ever worked for me. The consistency is thick but not clumpy. I used it even after applying false eyelashes; it is a female must have!
– Dior black eyeliner maybe the most difficult eyeliner to take off, but by far the best! It will not budge!

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with 5 people, living or dead, who would they be and why?

A famous Baroque painter named Peter-Paul Rubens. Definitely Andy Warhol just as long as he doesn’t leave me barefoot and glamorous in New York City like Edie Sedgwick. Come to think of it I would really love to see what Rubens would have to say to Warhol about art and vice-versa. Jayne Mansfield, because a dinner party requires both beauty and class. Then maybe Buddy Holly and Joe Strummer. Joe Strummer has always had allot to say so I’m sure the conversation won’t get boring- as for Buddy, I could be the girl in “True Love Ways”.

Q: Your weight and weight loss have been topics you are open about through your blog. In a modern society of “thinner is better” beauty ideals, you have still maintained a high self-esteem. What advice would you give ladies who are struggling with weight issues?

My weight loss was a gradual process taking over a year. My weight will continue to yo-yo give or take a few pounds. I believe it was an overall good decision to get some more exercise and be healthier. I was never dissatisfied with what I weighed before; I just knew I was not getting enough exercise.

Today’s socially imposed beauty standards are unrealistic and frankly unachievable. One can spend a life time trying to climb the beauty ladder to perfection, but the truth is our bodies will continue to change as we do. I hope to inspire women to accept themselves and realize you can be beautiful and full figured.

Q: You maintain that higher education is a top priority. How do you manage to keep a firm head on your shoulders, and balance your shooting/performing schedule with school?

At times it feels there are just not enough hours in the day for it all. I have a planner I write in religiously, planning day by day. After I graduate with a bachelor’s degree I would like to get my master then continue school and get my PhD. So looks like I have to start getting used to the busy life early!

Q: You talk about the concept of re-invention. Do you view your alter egos as extensions of yourself with personalities all their own?

I view them simply as extensions of myself. A prism has many facets, and this is just one reflection of my many colorful artistic genres. I am constantly reinventing and craving creation; it’s a concept that never leaves me.

Q: If 100 years from now, there is an “Ili Jean” legacy, what would you want it to be?

Ultimately, I just want to have a positive influence on women, I would like to inspire through burlesque, art, and education.

Q: What does the future hold for Ili Jean? Any upcoming projects we should know about?

At the moment I am going to school full time, and hopefully by next semester will continue my studies at the University of North Texas in Denton. Right now the sky is the limit; I am excited to see what the future holds for me. When I think of what the future holds I always remember a great quote by Leslie Caron, which I hope to live by.

Caffeinated Tomboy

"...its running, jumping, climbing trees... putting on make-up when you're up there!” - Eddie Izzard

Thanksgiving is in a few short weeks and instead of sweating to the oldies of cooking traditional Thanksgiving dinner I'm going camping! WooHoo! Mountain climbing, yoga, hiking, natural hot springs, DJ and live music in the middle of a desert with running hot water showers! All the comforts of camping that this reptile loves about camping - city girl camping that is.

But... being the reptile I am it's time to gear up in warm but cute clothes. Something I've had to learn to how to do. I grew up fashion disabled.

Have you ever known a mother with absolutely no fashion sense at all? Were you ones of those poor unfortunate souls like me who had to grow up with a mother who thought orange and puke green were just adorable? How about a Mumu on child? Yea... that was my step mother.

I grew up with a mother who tried to force "girlish things" on me. Except instead of pink ribbons, pink bedroom walls and flowery bedspreads everything in my room was sunflower yellow... electric sunflower yellow. My mother could have been the trend setting goddess for the 80's tacky neon color revolution - Viva La Vie Electric Sunflowers!

Image A Nightmare Before Easter where your walls are yellow, the carpet is yellow, the dressers are yellow, the bedspread is yellow with tiny (very tiny) pastel colored dainty flowers and your sheets were yellow - it's was like being smothered by an Easter Peep.

Oh sure I played with Barbie but she was never dressed in gold or yellow. I cried my eyes out when my brother spilled paint all over the non yellow clothes of my Barbie. Mother bought me new ones of course - gold and yellow mostly. I don't remember playing with Barbie after that.

But I feel I'm also a weird girl. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, even if I'm wearing a dress. It just happens. I don't always stop to think "oh, I'm wearing a dress, opps gotta act girly;" doesn't happen. If I'm in heels - that's another story. I have to use all of my super grrrl concentration to not look like an 8 year old in high heels... and I don't mean the child pageant children either.

So I'm looking for warm but cute. I think I'll do a Tomboy Martini for this camping adventure... Cute warm scarves and Flip Top Gloves and thermals under winter and summer type dresses with a good warm jacket and just a few pocket hand warmers.

...and none of it yellow

Bright Eyes

Helping eyes look brighter

I wasn’t sure what to think of Avon’s Look Alert Eye Brightener (Illuminating Pearl) and truth be told, I didn’t even remember ordering it… but there it was and being the curious spirit I am I had to at least try it.

The first time I used this I twisted the bottom for the liquid makeup to come to the tip of the brush…and I twisted a few more times. Apparently the first time you use it you have to twist it until you visibly see the makeup flow through the brush. Once you have, you don’t have to twist more than once or twice.

What I did find interesting is that it's often referred to as ‘eye foundation.’ I guess I am pretty much out of the girly girl makeup network because this is the first time I have ever heard of eye foundation, but I can see why Look Alert Eye Brightener would be called that.

If you are only using the Look Alert Eye Brightener by itself you won’t see a lot of color. It’s a very subtle creamy illuminating effect. If you only want something that will add a bit of color – a more natural “I’m not wearing makeup” kind of look this is great thing to add to your eyes. I’m planning to try this out as potential Cheater Makeup option for me.

Petal Power

The next thing I tried with this is Avon Precious Glimmer Powder Eye Shadow (Petal) on top of the Eye Brightener.

1) One eye had only the Eye Brightener
2) One eye had no makeup at all

On the eye that had the Eye Brightener the lavender Petal of Precious Glimmer Powder Eye Shadow was a bit darker… a little more intense.

The eye that had no makeup at all on it and where I applied just Precious Glimmer Powder Eye Shadow was very light, very subtle.

Two very different looks in my opinion.

If I was going out in the evening and I wanted a subtle but striking look I would wear the Eye Brightener underneath the powder shadow. If I only wanted a little bit of color in the day time I would wear the powder shadow by itself. But even in that I’m not 100% sure. Petal Powder Eye Shadow is very pretty but very light and I’m not sure how well it would be seen with my dark eyes and dark hair. I’ll probably reserve this pretty color when I want the subtle but striking look...and it's on sale for almost half the regular price. I may sell Avon, but I'm still frugal :P

Precision Glimmer Powder Eyeshadow

I read some reviews where people said they had problems with the Look Alert Eye Brightener brush. Personally I really like the soft brush. Maybe that’s because I have really sensitive eyes and the hard brushes seem a bit difficult for me to use – so personal preference I believe.

All of the reviews I've read for Precision Glimmer Powder Eyeshadow has been positive.

I remember this sort of makeup from when I was a little girl. My step mother used the worst 70's colors and I always thought it was 'play' makeup -- used way too much. I wonder if somebody from the Drew Carey Show saw an old picture of me wearing way too much and got the idea of Mimi from that :P

I cheat!

I can’t be the only one. The only one who finds that most times she is just too busy to spend even ten minutes putting on makeup… am I the only one?

I’m not kidding about this. Most days I am busily tapping along my keyboard doing any number of things such as internet research, event coordination or just looking for potential new contracts. Than I realize what time it is and it’s time to rush rush rush to get ready, prepared and properly dressed (for wherever I’m going) and that leaves little or no time for makeup. Some may argue with me but a guy doesn’t stop and say “oh, I need to sit down and prep my face before meeting the new client.”

I’m more about brains than beauty and that preference doesn’t work so well being female especially in Los Angeles. So I’ve really fallen for what I am now calling Cheater Makeup.

Yes… I could probably do similar tricks with other brands but it’s about quality products, time saving and how much the product cost. I’ve genuinely found that by using just two products from Avon I can fit in a few extra minutes it takes to put a little color on my eyes and lips. These two things can take less than ten minutes and add a big difference. I’ve actually received compliments of how well I look because of I took 5 minutes to add just a little bit of eye shadow color… and I’m thinking “geez all I did was run an eye shadow pencil over my eyes.” So yes, cheater makeup works.

So far my favorite cheater makeup products (that I receive the most compliments) are

Bright Lights Shadow Stix – Wow them white
‘Wow them white’ isn’t super white. You can see it’s white and it looks SUPER white when you see the eye shadow stix, but the color brightens your eyes more than it looks like an actual eye shadow.

Ultra Luxury Eye Liner – black
Draw a line over the bottom of each eye lid and you’re done. No fancy curves or swirls or Rockabilly slants…just a line to add a little eye catching color.

Avon Slick Tint For Lips – Glossy Wine
or
mark Tinted Sheenstick Hook Up Lip Balm - playful
My super cheater tip – Both of these have only a hint of color so you don’t need to line your lips with a lip pencil. The reason I have both is because mark Tinted Sheenstick Hook Up is an actual lip balm. I easily get chapped lips and when my lips are really dry they make any lipstick I put on look bad. ..and sometimes I just don’t have time (or won’t make time) to use a lip pencil
